Georgetown: Recently members of Deaf Association of Guyana Inc. benefited from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Guyana training and their performance was considered impressive as such they were chosen to take part in the upcoming competition.

In preparing the Deaf Association of Guyana representative, technology giant STARR Computer that partnered with STEM Guyana since their official launch donated a laptop computer to the Deaf Association team to aid in their development.

According to Lenovo Product Manager Shunella Taylor, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibilities a Lenovo Laptop Computer was donated for Robotic and Scratch Programming competition which will aid in students development through research.

Managing Director of Deaf Association of Guyana, Ms. Sabine McIntosh said STEM Guyana was approached to inquire whether deaf youths could be managed and trained in robotics and they were given a trail period in which participants showed potential.

She explained two groups were established, one in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo and the other at the David Rose special needs school. Both groups were trained and the participants at Tuschen produced their first moving robot but they were short of a proper laptop.

“They could not have proceeded much further, so we are very happy that STARR Computer has given us this donation since it’s very important for deaf students to develop skills,” McIntosh explained “ If you leave school without a marketable skill and you’re a deaf person life is very hard, but if you develop a skill there are different expectations and you can bargain as equally as anybody else.”

The Deaf Association Director further said the organization is looking to provide sustainable economic development for deaf youths which is the best way to go.

The STEM team conducted several Robotic training sessions and competitions around Guyana.

The upcoming summit will have two events one, titled Innov8 Expo, which will be held from March 24 to 25 followed by an Innov8 Business Forum on March 27.

Both events will show the diversity of technology and how it will impact all spheres of life in Guyana; providing the opportunity to display of the innovations and gadgets created by some of the best and brightest players in Guyana’s technology arena.
