State of Emergency overshadows Independence Day celebrations

Port-of-Spain: The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) is expressing cautious optimism that better days may follow after the current State of Emergency on the eve of this country's 49th independence Anniversary.

In reflecting on the state of the country on the celebration of the 49th year of Independence, DOMA says some elements of sunshine have been peering through the dark clouds of the suspension of liberties as there have been no murders at the hands of criminals and no serious road accidents or fatalities.

DOMA says while the current state of emergency origianally caused citizens to bow their heads in shame over what the country had come to, the group now feels there is a renewed degree of respect for the law and law enforcement agencies. DOMA is praising law enforcement for the vigour and dedication they have been showing in their duties over the last nine days of the state of emergency.

DOMA says the one unfortunate element of the work of law enforcement is the cry from some that certain communities are being targetted.

The Association notes there are honest law abiding citizens in these communities as well.

However, the Communicatuion Workers Union is questioning in its independence message how can the country claim to be truly independent when faced with a state of emergency with all rights that charcaterize an independent state, suspended.

The government has cancelled the annual fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.

The CWU says the present government has failed to correct any of the problems created by the previous government and to alleviate the problems faced by the masses.

The Opposition People's National Movement meanwhile notes it is sad that the country celebrates it's 49th Independence under a state of emergency that the Opposition views as unnecessary.
