Georgetown: The Guyana-Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM) and stakeholders have come together to support Cubans stranded in Guyana due to the closure of airports and cancellation of flights to the island, motivated by the COVID 19.

Halim Khan, President of this solidarity organization has made it possible to donate food to the neediest Cubans while assisting them with other necessities.
Some of the businesses that assisted the Cubans included Archie´s and Son of Sand and Stone Supply and Sea Transport, Khan´s Auto Sales, Mohammad and Hasseb Bachchus of the Meat Center, Khan´s Construction and Heavy Duty Equipment Rental, Mohamed´s Halaal Meat Center and Variety Store are amongst some of the contributors.
Likewise, Cuban residents of Guyana, such as Dr. Mayte Camacho, have facilitated appointment to sick Cuban nationals and the acquisition of medications for those who suffer from chronic diseases, as well as Professor Carmen Samé and her Guyanese husband, businessman Abdul Yusuf who donated food along with Basdeo Persaud are among other people who have collaborated selflessly for this purpose.
The hostels and rental houses managed by Cubans such as “Hostal Fermín”, “Hostal Bárbara”, “Hostal Harry”, “Hostal Nieves” and “Hostal El Sol” amongst others have welcomed Cubans at low prices and some free of charge, as a sign of solidarity with the affected Cubans.
Further, Cuban journalist Alfredo Ballesteros, who through social networks and his radio space “Hola Guyana”, has provided timely and useful information to the stranded Cubans and, in general, to the Spanish-speaking community residing in Guyana, on various topics, including the conflict with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The officials and workers of the Cuban Embassy to Guyana, in particular, Ambassador Narciso Reinaldo Amador Socorro and Consul Ricardo Lamas Camejo thanked the nobility and kindness of Guyanese people and solidarity Cubans have had in these difficult moments.
The GCSM President noted that over 500 Cubans visited Guyana every week and have contributed to the country’s economic development as it aims to strengthen trade between the two nations.
He explained that not only are some cambios benefitted from the Cubans’ heavy presence in Guyana, but homeowner, hotels, food establishments, taxis and other businesses are also reaped the benefits.
Last month scores of stranded Cuban shoppers left on emergency flights that were facilitated by Guyanese authorities.
Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, Narciso Reinaldo Armador Soeorro had said that Aruba Airlines assisted in this cause but flights were limited.
