Bridgetown.
Industrial action by Immigration Officers working at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) is on hold. The officers are upset that they were being subjected to the same search as passengers, while their colleagues from the Customs Department were exempted from the same scrutiny.
They are also upset about not being allowed to carry liquids including drinks, past screening points. Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers Roslyn Smith, the union which represent the officers told Trakker News, after a meeting with the chief operating officer of GAIA Joseph Johonson and the Acting Director of Civil Aviation Mitchinson Beckles, yesterday the strike action is being place on hold.
"The matter was thrashed out and solutions offered , we look forward to the out come of further discussion", says Smith.
She confirmed that among the solutions were legislative changes that would place immigration officers working at the airport on the same playing field in relation to security measures.
Under the Police Act and the Customs Act, police and customs officers assigned to the airport are exempted from searches.
