Bridgetown.
Civil aviation security is a priority for the Government of Barbados.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, expressed this view yesterday during a debate in the House of Assembly to amend the Civil Aviation Act.
Stuart told Parliament Barbados and the rest of the region had been lucky over the years but needed to guard guard against safety problems that could spell disaster for travellers and aircraft.
The Prime Minister stated that ramp inspections were a part of the safety regime, and Government would support aviation officials if they detained an aircraft for breaches.
During the debate Stuart, refferred to comments made recently by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Bruce Golding, that Barbadian aviation officials had detained a Caribbean Airline aircraft at the Grantley Adams International Airport.
"That was a routine check, they have to happen and not aircraft is exempt from ramp inspections, which are required to be performed in accordance with our conventions and our laws",Stuart said.
