Sugar harvest to end this month

This year's sugar crop has produced 14,168 tonnes of sugar so far.

 According sugar officials  up to Sunday May 5th, Andrew's has produced 7531 tonnes of sugar  and Portvale  6637 tonnes of sugar, from almost 132 thousand tonnes of canes.

The officials told Trakker News that the  crop which is into second monthwill finish at the end of May and they are hoping to produce another four thousand tonnes of sugar, to reach the target of just over 18 thousand tonnes of the commodity.

The sugar crop started on Wednesday March 6th,  sugar officials are hoping they can harvest the 50 thousand tonnes of canes needed to reach the 18 thousand ton target set.

 Barbados will be making only one shipment to the European Union in June to fulfill its quota requirements with that body.

Last year's harvest produced just over 24 thousand tonnes of sugar.
