Once the sugar industry is transformed there is no reason why it cannot be profitable.
Minister of Agriculture, Dr David Estwick, made this assessment last night following a meeting with various stakeholders in the industry last night.
Estwick said that the sugar industry was under strain and stress and must be transformed.He stated that value added products for the domestic, regional and international market is a vital part of a revised sugar industry.
The Minister added that it was unfortunate some cane farmesr were having financial pressure to the point where they were being forced to lay off workers as a result of this situation, the Ministry of Agriculture was looking to enhance the price support structure.
The three hour meeting was held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill,St Michael.
