Georgetown : The Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) remains mum and non-communicative although it continues to deprive thousands of factory and field workers of their legal Holiday-with-Pay (HWP) due payable since 25th May, 2012.
According to the The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), workers at Uitvlugt, Wales and Enmore Estates have been engaging in strikes over the past days. In the light of the deafening silence by the major employer of Guyanese workers, on the other estates workers are being persuaded that protest actions across the industry are now the necessary answer to force the Corporation to pronounce on a date of the HWP payment.
The union puzzled that the Corporation seems to have no respect to its dependable workforce in identifying at least an early date of the payment. In the off season, as it is now, when the industry is not reaping canes, workers solidarity to defend any right is not at its best and thus the Corporation’s present attitude must be seen within this context.
