GEORGETOWN: Speaker of the Surinamese Parliament, Dr Jennifer Geerlings-Simons has commenced a three-day visit in Guyana.
Dr Geerlings-Simons is being accompanied by a team of 11 officers. “I expect to get a feel of what both parliaments feel like and to work with Guyana to decide on how we can work together,” Dr Geerlings-Simons said following the meeting.
Among the activities planned for the visit are courtesy calls on the president, prime minister, ministers of government, leader of the opposition and the leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC). In addition, the delegation will also meet members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Committee, members of the Parliamentary Management Committee and members of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations.
Her visit was in response to an invitation by Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman. According to a release from the Parliament Office, Trotman has emphasised that the nature of the visit should go beyond “merely meeting” with key members of the government and the opposition.
He posited that it should result in the establishment of a Guyana-Suriname Association to enhance relations between the nations’ parliaments and peoples.
