Georgetown: Today over 800 teachers from schools between Plaisance and Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara attended a rally to commemorate World’s Teachers Day, hosted by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) at the Enmore Community Centre Ground. Officials from Region 4 as well as the Ministry of Education and those from the GTU were present to take part in this commemorative rally and to show their support for the hard working teachers on the East Coast.
Delivering brief welcoming remarks was the Regional Education Officer, Ms. Jennifer Bourne, who thanked the teachers present for turning up in such large numbers to be a part of this symbolic rally, and to highlight the intrinsic value teachers have in our society. “Teachers you are very vital to the education system. You are extremely important. You have been doing a great job here on the East Coast, but I urge you to keep striving for better. Let us continue to work together to realise our goal of providing quality education within this region.”
Bourne further urged teachers to remain committed to raising the standard of education on the East Coast of Demerara. She also encouraged the gathering of teachers to see themselves as a team dedicated to bringing out the best in the children present in their various classrooms and schools for whom they are responsible. “Let us continue to work together for the betterment of education in the region. I urge all you teachers to work together and help each other as together we strive to lift the standard of education on the East Coast,” Bourne said.
In delivering the key note address, the Honourable Minister of Education, Ms Priya Manickchand underscored the vast importance of teachers in the education system, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further enhancing the education system in Guyana. “I strongly believe that the only way we can develop as a nation is to continue to invest in the education of our young people. And as teachers, you play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of our young people through the quality of teaching you provide,” the minister said.
While commending the teachers on the East Coast for the fine jobs they have been doing, the minister encouraged them to do better to bring out the best in the children they teach. “I want you to go to school every day and put out your best to ensure that our young people leave school with the qualifications, confidence and character to be able to sensibly decide their future as young adults.”
“We must continue to set high standards here on the east coast and we must meet, and surpass, those higher standards. And every time we do, more children will be emancipated from ignorance and enlightened to succeed.”
As teachers across the country mark the celebration of World Teachers Day in their own special ways, may they continue to recognise and embrace the vocation of teaching, and remain resolute and committed to this most distinguished profession. Effective teaching can change a child’s life immeasurably for the better.
