Teenager critical following school fight

San Fernando: A 14-year-old male student of the San Fernando West Secondary School is warded in a critical condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital after being severely beaten by one of his peers. A young female student also sustained blows during the altercation, but has since been discharged  from hospital.

Students at the school say the violent encounter was caused by an argument over a hand band although others indicate that the two 14-year-old boys have been adversaries from early in their high school life.

Reports say the scuffle began near the school's cafeteria just before 11am and ended on the lawn to the front the building.

School officials could not say why no one intervened to stop the assault.

Police public relations officer Sharon Lee Assang told the media a fourteen year old male student has been detained by police. Some students say they never saw the security guard, until much later. They say the prevalence of fights had signficantly decreased in their school but that this was one of the worst they've seen.
