The police are investigating an incident that occurred at Non Pariel, ECD, during which three youths were reportedly assaulted by a number of residents.
Investigations so far have revealed that four youths went into a shop at Kellman Street, Non Pariel, ECD, that is owned by Rebita Abdool. At the time Rebita Abdool and her 13 years old niece were in the shop.
It is reported that the four youths, who were unarmed, entered the shop and made some enquiries about bicycle parts to the niece of the shop-owner and also requested that she open the counter door apparently for them to have a look at the parts. Upon hearing this, the shop-owner panicked and ran to the back believing it to be bandits because about two months ago she had experienced an armed robbery.
She then experienced a short black-out and upon coming to herself began to shout for “thief”. A number of neighbours responded and confronted the four youths, during which one of them managed to ride away on a bicycle.
The other three were attacked by the residents who were armed with cutlasses, spades and sticks resulting in Shakeel Answick, 16 years of Company Road, Buxton, receiving chops to his head, foot and hand; and Mark Lustal, 16 years of Cummings Street, Buxton, and Lancelot Griffith,
17 years of Company Road, Buxton, being assaulted about their bodies.
The police responded promptly to the report received and took the three injured men to the Buxton Health Centre where they were treated and sent away.
They were then taken to the Vigilance Police Station where they gave statements. They later complained of feeling unwell and were taken to the Georgetown Hospital for further medical attention where they were treated and sent away
