The Caribbean Journal featured The Caribbean Year in Review and rated 2011 as the Year of the Vote where five countries had chosen new leadership, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia, Haiti and the British Virgin Islands.
2011 can also be branded as the Year of Energy. Some countries were seeking alternative energy sources with Jamaica’s wind farms, Nevis and Dominica Geothermal energy and Bahamas and Guyana exploring major offshore oil findings.
The Caribbean Journal said that it was also a year of Moving Forward from having a new CARICOM Secretary General to the launch of a new, low-cost regional air carrier.
The General elections in Guyana saw a new leader from the PPP/C and is ruling with a minority government. A Caribbean Airlines carrier crashed landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and was split in half, fortunately there were no fatalities. The same CJI Airport has also sealed a deal for grand expansion thanks to China and a new international low-cost air carrier was launched in December in Guyana with non-stop flights to the United States with major advantages over the other airlines. While investors begin the programme of construction of a new $51 million Marriot Hotel in Georgetown, the country is also engaging the attention of would-be investors in its offshore oil sector.
