Georgetown : The legacy of the late Pandit Shree Prakash Gossai was honored last evening with the unveiling of a statue at at the Indian Monument Gardens located on Church Street
Shri Prakash Gossai was a strong advocate of Hinduism and was known for his devotional songs. Prime Minister Hinds during his tribute stated that he felt a great loss when Gossai died in 2009, though he knew him for a short period of time.
He added that Pandit Gossai was a very pleasant and outgoing person who will always be remembered for the role he played in society. “We have lost a great person, someone who I believe would have brought the different faiths together… I hope that we continue to have him in our memory, and be motivated by his life,” he said.
Former President Jagdeo expressed sadness as he remembered Gossai. He spoke of him as a very humble and religious individual who was willing to reach out to humanity regardless of race or religious background.
He said, as a teenager living in rural Guyana, where there were no freedom and future for young people, and at a time when there was a sense of hopelessness, he met Gossai and was immediately drawn to him, because like the late Reepu Daman Persaud, he translated the scriptures in a unique way.
