Bridgetown.
Only thirty percent of the workers in Barbados are members of the trade union movement, this disclosure was made by Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo during debate on the Employment Rights Bill in the House of Assembly yesterday.
“There are many people 70 percent of the workforce who have no arragement or access to a trade union and would need to have legislation in place that would give powers to the Chief Labour Officer and an Employment Rights Tribunal, so that this matter be addressed”, Byer- Suckoo told Parliament.
“It is important that Barbadains come to realise that when this legislation is passed, they can go to the Chief Labour Officer and no longer sit back and lament their condition because they feel that they have been cheated and mistreated and they know that better should be done but they have no way of getting it done”, Byer-Suckoo said.
“Workers in Barbados have to understand there will be a new way of doing things, there will be better provision and protection under the law and they will be able to get matter addressed”, she added.
