Georgetown: Three men were charged and remanded for the murders of teen cousins, Isaiah and Joel Henry in the Cotton Tree Backdam, West Coast Berbice.
Anil Sancharra Vinod Gopaul Akash Singh

On Friday, the trio 34-year-old Anil Sancharra, 30-year-old Vinod Gopaul and 34-year-old, Akash Singh appeared before the Chief Magistrate and were not required to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge.
Sancharra and Gopaul were charged jointly for the murders of Isaiah and Joel Henry while Akash Singh was charged separately for the same double murder.
The men were unrepresented as they appeared before the Chief Magistrate who after reading out the charges remanded the three to jail until February when they will appear in the Blairmont area.
Singh gave his professions as a fisherman, while Gopaul said he is a labourer and Sancharra said he is unemployed.
The three men were reportedly nabbed after an informant went to the police.
Singh had allegedly told his relatives and another person about the crime and his role in it. One of the persons he told informed the police and Singh was then arrested at his Zeelugt house and later told detectives of the others who were involved.
He told detectives he and the others were planting ganja in the Berbice backlands but some others, who were also planting, accused them of destroying their “weed.”
On the day in question, Singh said they were at their camp when the Henry boys, both in short pants – one wearing a white shirt, the other a blue were passing.
Singh said he and the others asked them, the Henry boys, if they wanted weed to burn (or smoke); the Henry boys, Singh claimed, asked if they had anything to eat.
Singh said he and the others started to talk about how they were accused of destroying some weed, and the Henry boys started to laugh, leading the others to believe that it was the Henry boys who destroyed the weed.
He said it was at this point that “Magga” fired his cutlass at the Henry boys, and “Rasta” followed. Singh claimed he was threatened by “Magga” and “Rasta” that if he didn’t join in, they would kill him.
As a result, Singh said he joined in chopping the boys. He said that they then decided to remove the bodies from the area, doing so on a horse. Singh said it was “Magga” and “Rasta” who took the bodies out and he did not see where the bodies were dumped.
Singh said the area camp where the murders occurred was set on fire. Singh took the police to the location.
The breakthrough in the case comes almost four months after the murders of the teenagers. The police and the government have been under pressure by the relatives of the boys and the public to solve the crimes, which sparked violent protests throughout the country.
The teenage cousins, Isaiah and Joel Henry, were found murdered in the Cotton Tree Backdam, West Coast Berbice one day after they went to pick coconuts in the #3 Village backdam.
Their bodies were found mutilated and with multiple chop wounds including slashes to their necks and backs.
The bodies also appeared to have been moved from the scene of the crime and placed in another area where they were eventually discovered.
The double murder led to days of protest action on the West Coast of Berbice as family members and villagers demanded justice.
Just recently, family members picketed the Criminal Investigations Department over the lack of updated information on the investigations.
The Guyana Police Force has been receiving assistance with its investigations from the Regional Security System and the US Federal Bureau of Investigations.
