Georgetown : The state of affairs at the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has been described as just a disaster by President Donald Ramotar.
President Ramotar said it is very sad given that there’s so much to do in the capital city of Georgetown, but the Mayor isn’t his showing his maturity.
“From all the information that I have, and all that I have read, all the Town Clerk is trying to do is ensure accountability and ensure the viability of the Council itself…I don’t see why they should have a problem with that type of thing happening,” the Head of State said.
“If you look at the city council they have more than 900 people working with them. Some of them you don’t even see… what they are being paid for I don’t know. Maybe these are the political patronage that is given at the level of the town council, yet our city is in the way that it is,” he stated.
He added that it is ridiculous and citizens should raise their voices against the current state of affairs.
Since the appointment of Town Clerk Carol Sooba by former Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud, the Mayor, Hamilton Green, and several members of the City Council have been embroiled in various issues and court actions in an attempt to squash her appointment.
City Hall has been is receipt of millions of dollars in subventions to assist with the purchasing of equipment and the procurement of services but, in government’s opinion, has failed to deliver on its mandate.
