Georgetown: The People’s National Congress Reform has accused the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Human Services and the Guyana Police Force of failing in their obligation to protect women from the spate of murders which have rocked mainly rural communities this year. It should be apparent that the present law-enforcement measures with respect to the human security of persons at risk are not functioning, said the main opposition party. In a statement to the press PNC/R presidential candidate David Granger said, "In addition to current ‘wife-murders’, there have also been several rural ‘rape-murders’ in previous years".
Granger added that these crimes have highlighted how low the level of human security is, particularly for women and girl children, in certain areas of this country. "They have exposed the seeming inability of the Administration and its law-enforcement and social welfare services to comprehend the causes of the crisis. As a result, no policies have been put in place to ensure the safety of the country’s most vulnerable citizens – often very old women and very young girl children. Granger posited.
The party explained that the frightening frequency with which women have been murdered raises questions of why they are so prevalent, why they persist, what can be done to prevent them and how to protect likely victims from that fate.
