“Too many untrained teachers,” says union

There are too many teachers in Barbados without professional qualifications. This is the view of President of the Barbados Union of Teachers Mrs. Karen Best.

According to Mrs Best there are too many teachers in the system that is untrained, unable to access training or indifferent to training.

Best also stated that there is serious disconnect between the entry qualification into the teaching profession and the entry qualification into the teacher training institution.

“In Barbados we have a teacher training institution that offers a certificate in Education Management by the University of the West Indies, and when you finish that course and receive your certificate it does not prepare you to be a teacher” say Best.

She continued, we need to professionalise teaching, recently we had discussions looking at the measurements that must be use to ensure that teachers can be qualified and the issue of licensing teachers.”

Best was speaking at a symposium on Teacher Training and Development at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
