Too many women on the poverty line

Bridgetown.

Minister of Familly, Culture, Sports and Youth Stephen Lashley, says too many women are living in poverty and are exposed to abuse and violence.

In a massage to commemorate International Women's Day, Lashley praised the great strides made by women over the years, he said many were still facing challenges that must be addressed.

"It remains a cause for concern that the recently published results of the Country Assessment of Living Conditions survey indicates that the majority of poor households in Barbados are headed by women , who are in low paying jobs or unemployed and these household   s tend to be large or overcrowded", Lashley said.

He said the survey showed that women and girls were more likely to be exposed to abuse and violence.

Lashely stated that the Government remains committed to assisting such women.

"We are determined to empower our women to successfully tackle these issues through variousprogrammes of intervention", He added.
