Tourism under threat says BHTA official

Bridgetown.

President of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Colin Jordan, yesterday warned that vulgarity.materialism and intolerance can have devastating impact on the island's tourism industry.

Jordan liken the effect of  some of the current negative trends in the country to that of a Category 5 hurricane.

"We are inviting people to our country to share our lifestyle with us, our culture. We, however, are losing some of  that culture. We are importing to many negatives from North Atlantic countries. As a result, we are as a people becoming increasingly vulgar, increasingly secular, increasingly materialistic  and increasingly intolerant", Jordan said.

"This is a development that is negatively impacting on our service" he added.

Jordan was delivering the weekly lunchtime lecture of the ruling Democratic Labour Party at the party headquarters in George Street, St Michael.

The topic was "Will the Tourism Industry go the way of the Sugar Industry"?
