San Fernando: The trade union movement says prime minister Kamla Persad-Biseesar will not be invited to this year's Labour Day celebrations on June 19th.
The prime minister created history last year when she became the first prime minister to speak on a Labour Day platform in Fyzabad. Back then the prime minister had announced a grant of $100,000 towards the celebration.
However labour leaders say they are yet to get the money. They make it clear though that the reason not to invite the prime minister is because they don't want the event to be politicised.
President-General of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union, Ancil Roget says the focus will be solely on the working class.
This year's celebration is being entitled, "No justice, no industrial peace", and will be addressed by a range of speakers that the union leaders say they are not willing to make public just yet..
Roget is making a special appeal to workers who feel they have been unjustly treated, including those who lost their jobs in the Unemployment Relief Programme and the Community Enhancement Programme, to join the Labour Day march.
He says trade unions from both the National Trade Union Centre and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions will join forces for the celebration as they unite in the interest of the working class.
Labour leaders say they stand united against the government's offer of five percent wage increases for workers. President of the Bankers, Insurance and General Workers Union, Vincent Cabrera says the government must reconsider or pay the ultimate price.
