Transport Ministry tight-lipped on resignation of Caribbean Airlines’ chairman

Port-of-Spain: The Ministry of Transport is remaining tight-lipped on the resignation of Caribbean Airlines Chairman George Nicholas who has has tendered his resignation.

The resignation comes 10 months after he was appointed to lead the board of the airline. Nicholas tendered his resignation to Transport Minister Devant Maharaj on Tuesday evening.

The reason for his departure has not been divulged but Government sources have revealed that Nicholas’ exit followed a disagreement with Maharaj on the acquisition of two additional aircraft for the airline.

This resignation follows several calls for Nicholas to be removed from the post and a very public conflict between Nicholas and former line minister Jack Warner.

There have been other issues that have plagued Nicholas’s term in office which started with the firing of former Chief Executive Captain Ian Brunton, controversy over the planned purchase of planes from ATR and the acquisition of Air Jamaica.

The Transport Ministerhas issued a statement that confirmed Nicholas' impending deprtaure and says he met with other members of the board this morning to get a clarification and better understanding of the current issues.

The minister says until all the issues have been examined, a determination on the way forward will not be decided upon. He says it would be premature and counter-productive to make any further announcements at this time.
