Georgetown : Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon disclosed that Government has approved measures to facilitate the installation of Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMSs) on Guyana’s trawler fleets.
He said the installation of VMSs would secure the integrity of the sector in the Fisheries sector and “this of course has to do with sea bob and the contribution to the economy and food and nutrition of Guyanese.”
Dr. Luncheon added that the installation of the equipment would also assist Guyana in obtaining the Marine Stewardship Certification, “a factor that is having a big role in the destination of our fisheries products in North America and in Europe,” he explained.
Dr. Luncheon said that the Guyana Association of Trawler Owners and Sea Food Processors has been in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture under which the Fisheries Division falls, and has hammered out an agreement for the installation of monitoring device on the fleet.
Cabinet has approved duty free and VAT remissions on the equipment and the appropriate undertakings by the National Frequency Management Unit “to make this initiative a reality,” Dr. Luncheon said.
