Four children are among the 11 Trinidadians trying to escape the escalating violence in war-torn Libya. The locals, all employed within the energy industry, are in the midst of the violence erupting on the once quiet, but dictatorial soil.
Protesting youths rose up against long-standing dictator Moammar Gadhafi last week and the protests turned deadly when an unmoved Gadhafi called on militant forces to open live fire on the youths. This sparked further international outrage and prompted several countries to engage embassies to bring their citizens back home.
Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Surujrattan Rambachan today confirmed that the Goonoo family of four was on board a plane bound for Rome and he was working on getting the other locals back home to safety.
He said though all modes of transport was suspended, a chartered plane out of the United Kingdom was finally allowed to land at 10.30 am local time (4.30pm Libyan time) and later confirmed that the family was on board and in the air.
