Two children among five killed in arson attack

Laventille: An early morning tragedy in Trou Macaque, Laventille has left a 10-month-old baby and her two-year-old sibling among five people dead.
Just after one this morning two brothers were arguing and one reportedly threw a molotov cocktail into an apartment on level five of the apartment building in Trou Macaque, Laventille.

Public Information Officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Servive Sergeant Wayne Mystar confirmed that investigating officers have indicated that the blaze was deliberaely set.

Five people died.

Several other sustained injuries when they jumped from the fifth floor of the apartment building to escape the blaze and have been warded at hospital along with a fire officer who was injured in the line of duty.

One man has since been detained in connection with the incident but the police say they are looking for other suspects.

Angry residents complained that the building did not have a fire escape hence the reason why people were forced to jump to escape.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar visited the scene and mandated the housing minister Dr Roodal Moonilal to have his ministry review the buildings which are four decades old to embark on a programme of installing fire escapes.

Displaced residents have been relocated to another government housing scheme on a temporary basis.
