Two new wells to be drilled in Linden

Georgetown: Some 4500 residents of the community of Amelia’s Ward in Linden, Region 10 will soon benefit from improved water supply with the drilling of two new wells which is slated for commencement in July, 2019.

This will be done at the estimated cost of GYD$40M and is a provision under the GYD$170M supplemental budget which was recently approved for Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) in the National Assembly.

The drilling of the wells will ensure an adequate supply of water for treatment and distribution for the rapidly expanding area of Amelia’s Ward as well as create redundancy within the system. Further, the production of the Amelia’s Ward Water Treatment will be increased by 33% to sustain 24 hours operation.

Currently functioning at its maximum capacity of 220 meter cubes per hour, the new wells will allow the production at the treatment plant to increase to 320 meter cubes per hour.

In addition to the drilling of the wells, which are slated for an October, 2019 completion, other works include the installation of additional distribution pipes in Cinderella City, South Amelia’s Ward and in the squatting area.

This project is in alignment Sustainable Development goal number 6 which speaks to clean water and sanitation for all people. Further, it is in keeping with the Government of Guyana’s mandate to provide safe, potable water to all residents across all regions.

Meanwhile, some 9000 residents will soon benefit from improved quality of service with the replacement of Booster Pumps at the Wisroc Water Treatment Plant.

The installation of a 4 inch distribution network is also ongoing and will benefit some 525 residents of West Watooka Hill Top. This project is scheduled for completion by July 31, 2019 and will afford the majority of the community with first time access to potable water via the distribution network
