U.S expresses concern over no credible election results yet in Guyana

Georgetown: Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, Ambassador Michael Kozak on Friday said the United States Government continues to keep a close eye on the electoral process in Guyana noting that it has been seven weeks since Guyanese voted and there is no credible election results.

“It has been more than seven weeks since Guyana’s elections.  There has been still no credible outcome.  The Guyana Elections Commission has a preliminary work plan for a recount but has not issued a timeline. We remain gravely concerned that so much time has passed without a credible result. Further delays violate the Guyanese people’s rights to a transparent, credible, and timely electoral process,” Ambassador Kozak said.

Meanwhile, on Friday United States Ambassador to Guyana Sarah Ann Lynch called for an expeditious start of the national recount of all votes cast on March 2, 2020, which will bring an end to the ongoing electoral process in Guyana.

“We’re pleased to hear that the recount has been agreed to and we look forward to the recount starting as quickly as possible and finishing as expeditiously as possible,” the Ambassador said.

The Diplomat noted that it is pertinent for the logistical arrangements for the recount to adhere to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) guidelines but noted that this must be done quickly.

“I know there are a lot of discussions going on in terms of whatever we count is COVID compliant so there is a lot of things to be put in place but again, we really hope those are put in place quickly and that we can hear about a start date really soon,” the U.S Ambassador said.

On March 26, the US Government summoned Guyana’s Ambassador to the US Riyad Insanally sternly reiterate its position that it will not accept any Government which is sworn in using flawed elections results.

The US Government continues to maintain that vote tabulation marred Guyana’s elections and has been calling for the national recount initiated by President David Granger under the supervision of CARICOM.
