UG biodiversity programme to soon be realized.

Georgetown : Minister of Education said everything is in place to execute a World Bank funded programme designed to improve the University of Guyana’s biodiversity’s capabilities.

The Minister indicated that personnel to fill key positions such as that of coordinator, accountant and procurement officer have already been indentified

The Science and Research Project is intended to vastly improve the bio-diversity capability of the University of Guyana, through the construction of a fully equipped bio-diversity centre, laboratories, and fund feasibility study for the establishment of an International Centre for Biodiversity Research and Low Carbon Development.

The agreement was recently inked between Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh and World Bank representatives and is indicative of Government’s efforts to improve capabilities of the nation’s tertiary institution through the following: produce a resurgence in the science curriculum, with a leaning toward the needs of the LCDS; to prop up basic research, in order to advance knowledge on environmental protection and biodiversity preservation; enhance existing laboratory facilities and the infrastructure of the four faculties, inclusive of drainage, internet network, and facilities management.
