Georgetown: The United Nations body here has congratulated Guyana on its achievement of the first Millennium Development Goal (MDG) .
Country representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation; Dr. Lystra Fletcher has applauded Guyana’s commitment to investments in the agriculture sector and regional food security.
Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Guyana and Suriname; Dr. Suleiman Braimoh, indicated that this achievement is significant in positively impacting the lives of children, since they bare a lot of the burden of poverty.
Meanwhile, country representative of the Pan-American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO); Adrianus Vlugman stated that it is proud to have collaborated with the ministries of health and agriculture to improve the nutrition levels of vulnerable groups.
Within the Caribbean Community (Caricom), Guyana and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the only two member states which have satisfied MDG’s number one goal to halve the proportion of hungry people.
In addition, they have also met the more stringent World Food Summit (WFS) Goal, having reduced by half the absolute number of undernourished people between 1990-92 and 2010-2012.
