Port-of-Spain: A team from the United Nations will come to this country next month to destroy small weapons that have been seized by police.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar confirmed this as she spoke to reporters on her return to the country from New York this morning.
The agency is the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-Lirec).
It says on its website that it strives to address the peace and security needs of the region, in coordination with its partners, through the enhancement of public security; promotion of confidence-building measures; engagement in advocacy efforts; and assistance in the elaboration of policy-making and implementation of international instruments.
UN-Lirec enters countries on the request of member states, to among other things, destroy weapons.
It's unlikely that recently recovered firearms would be destroyed in October as they'd first have to be used as evidence in trials.
