UNC slams Opposition Leader on assassination stance

Couva: The UNC arm of the People's Partnership Government is condeming statements made by Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley that there is no real assassination threat against the government.

The UNC says it views with deep concern the continuing attempts to prevent the government from fulfilling its mandate.

The party in a statement says it is disappointed by the approach of the Opposition Leader and the People's National Movement in the treatment of such a serious matter.

The party's Chief Executive Officer Dr Andy Ali believes the attempts to trivialise the delicate situation shows that the Opposision is more concerned with the acquisition of power and would have no regrets if the stability of the nation is compromised.

Dr Ali says the party strongly condemns this approach since it erodes the very nature of democracy and the traditions associated with it.

The party further states that the negative attitude of the Opposition comes at a time when the prime minister and the People's Partnership government have begun to make a serious dent in crime statistics and in the recovery of guns, ammunition and narcotics.

The party has congratulated and commended the protective services for for for the speed with which they have worked to apprehend persons allegedly associated with this plot.
