US Attorney General quells fears of major fallout over extradition ruling

Port-of-Spain: No major fallout from the US over the ruling of the Appeal Court not to extradite two businessmen, Ishwar Galbaransingh and Steve Ferguson wanted in the US on corruption charges.

Any such fears were allayed following high powered discussions in Port-of-Spain today on security issues as Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar meets with US Attorney General Eric Holder.

Holder says the extradition treaty between this country and the United States is good and that the US considers this country a partner in the fight against crime.

Holder will attend the Organization of American States Third Meeting of Ministers Pesponsible for Public Security in the Americas which opens in Port -of-Spain tomorrow morning.

The two-day meeting will focus on the topic of police management as a key factor for progress in achieving better security for the citizens of the Americas.

The high-level authorities are expected to seek to build on three major areas including modernizing police institutions within a democratic framework; supporting police professionalization and training; and strengthening cooperation on police information.
