US based Guyanese stabs wife to death

Bibi Deen

Berbice: The police are hunting for a United States citizen who allegedly killed his Guyanese reputed wife before fleeing the scene Tuesday night.

Dead is Bibi Shameana Deen, called Sharmela, of Lot 1071 New Area Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice. The body is awaiting a post-mortem at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

The deceased's youngest brother, Mohamed Khairoodin, explained that around 23:00hrs on Tuesday, he was aroused from sleep by a phone call from a relative residing in Reliance who informed him of the sad incident. Khairoodin said he then dialled his sister’s home number and spoke to his 13-year-old nephew, Ravendra.

“I call and Rishie answer the phone, and he said ‘who is this?’ Me said ‘Uncle Arif’… me said ‘wha happen, babe’… he said ‘come now Uncle Arif, daddy jook up mommy and mommy lie down with sheer blood, like she dead’… me ask where he father? He said his father get away.”

On arrival at the house, Khairoodin said the ambulance was already there and his sister was wrapped in a bed sheet. He said that the incident occurred in the lower flat of the concrete property.

The woman was reportedly drenched in blood. He said that after a closer examination at the mortuary, three wounds were observed: on the forehead, left breast area and right rib cage.

Khairoodin said after questioning his nephew, he learnt that Persaud had returned home and appeared to have had some liquor in his system. The boy said he left his parents conversing downstairs, went up stairs to his bedroom and fell asleep.  “After he jump up hear he mudda holler for Rishie, Rishie come help me… he said when he run down, his father try to lock the step door but he didn’t lock it properly and the boy came down and saw his mudda.”

Khairoodin said his brother-in-law, Ramdani Persaud, called Prakash, 46, has not been seen since. The deceased operated a grocery shop in the lower flat of the property and the accused lived and worked in the U.S. but came back to Guyana in January 2012 to visit. At the time of the incident, the couples’ son, Dorendra, 16, was staying with an aunt in Reliance.

According to Deen's neighbours they heard cries for help, but when they eventually realised what had happened, they found her lying face down in a pool of blood near to a bed. There were also reports of three gunshot-like sounds going off at the deceased’s house. According to Deen's brother the man was charged for assaulting his sister in January, and was placed on one year’s bond by Magistrate, Adela Nagamootoo.

His lawyer, Charrandass Persaud, pleaded with the court to be lenient since the deceased had forgiven him and they had reconciled.
