$US2.2M marijuana delivery intercepted in Pomeroon, six arrested

Georgetown: Six persons were on Friday arrested with a large quantity of marijuana at the mouth of the Pomeroon River in the vicinity of Frank’s Beach by agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

Reports indicate that the marijuana was being loaded on three go-fast boats that were destined for the Virgin Islands east of Puerto Rico.

According to CANU, This operation was conducted over a two week period by drug enforcement officers along with Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard ranks.

“The aim of this operation was to gather critical intelligence on the movement of narcotics from Guyana by a local drug trafficking organisation to other Caribbean Territories. The operational area included region four, five, six and seven. In addition to 1007.2 lbs. of local as well as foreign marijuana, this joint operation netted – three Go–Fast vessels with six outboard engines.   The narcotics would have a street value of $ 2.26 million USD at its final destination. Six local persons are in custody assisting with the investigation,” CANU noted.
