UWI honours former President Noor Hassanali

St Augustine: Six years after his passing, former President Noor Hassanali is being honoured by the University of the West Indies, with a hall being named after him.

UWI today said that its Finance and General Purposes Committee recently held a meeting at UWI’s Cave Hill campus in Barbados and ratified decisions made by its Naming Committee, which has proposed to name the Faculty of Law’s Auditorium, St Augustine Campus, “The Noor Hassanali Auditorium,” after the second president of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Two other departments are also being renamed including the Department of Food Production, Faculty of Food and Agriculture, St Augustine campus, to be called “The UWI Rajendra Rastogi Rabbitry,” and “The Lawrence Wilson Food Biology Laboratory.”

The Committee also recommended that the new Vice-Chancellery Building at the Mona Campus be called “The University of the West Indies – Regional Headquarters.”
Hassanali was president of this country from 1987 to 1997.

He was the first Indo-Trinidadian to hold the Office of President and was the first muslim Head of State in the Americas.
