Sir Hilary Beckles, pro vice chancellor, and principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus; says the intention of the one graduate per household drive at the Cave Hill Campus, was to create national awareness on the funding of education.
"When I first came to Cave Hill as principal in 2002, there was a cap of 2000 students on the enrolment in the social science faculty, because that is what the country could afford", said Sir Hilary.
He continued, "If you look at the areas where the growth in Barbados' economy was taking place,it was contradictory to cap the disciplines that were necessary to drive the economy".
"We aligned the enrolment with sectors of economy and we open up those areas to drive development. We started to speak about one graduate per household as language to create a national consensus," he added.
According to Sir Hilary, the drive was successful and the enrolment move to over 6000.
A campus should not be falling behind its country, says Sir Hilary.
"The reason why a country funds a campus is to ensure the campus is ahead of the country, pulling the country with it as it goes", he noted.
Sir Hilary was speaking at the Frank Collymore Hall on the topic,"How Sustainable Is the Barrow Vision For Tertiary Education Funding In Barbados.
