Jamaica: The Jamaica Observer reported that there is a holiday like mood lingering over several communities after yesterday's People's National Party (PNP) election victory over the Jamaica Labour Party.
The PNP President Portia Simpson Miller told jubilant supporters last night that she was thankful to the Jamaican people. She said, “We will be working to move this country forward to achieve growth and development and for job creation…as we move to balance the books, we will be moving to balance people’s lives.”
The report said that Simpson Miller also asked public servants to ensure the protection of Government property, and added: “Today, the Jamaica people assisted us to rescue Jamaica and to restore the power. You will hear from us soon, as we move to put our team in place to take charge of the Government.”
Statistics from the Electoral Office of Jamaica confirmed that 48 per cent of the electorate turned out to vote at 6,629 polling stations in 2,200 locations islandwide in what electoral officials, observers and police said was possibly the most peaceful election in local political history.
According to the Jamaican Observer report, a day after the event several street corners have become the scene of heated arguments while in other areas empty streets tell of a tale as some party supporters have opted to remain at home to wash in the misery of defeat. Some PNP supporters gathered along the road side shouting, "Sista P we say!"
At Cassia Park on Red Hills Road, traffic was slightly held up as orange clad supporters held up large flags and blew horns loudly as they celebrated the PNP victory. The mood was the same along Whitehall Avenue as cars filled with PNP supporters drove up and down the roadway blowing their horns loudly.
