Bridgetown.
The pernnial problems which leads to water outages in certain areas of rural Barbados could soon be over.
General Manager of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) Denis Yearwood, says the solution to the problem might be found through the Water and Sanitation Systems Upgrade Project which is being funded by the Inter American Development Bank (IDB).
According to Yearwood, the challenge facing the BWA occurs during heavy rainfall when mud is washed into the underground stream that runs under the well at the Bowmanston facility in St John, this causes the water to become muddy as a result pumping has to cease.
"This is a challenge that we have grapple with for a number of years. We built some stuuctures at Pool, St John, which were intended to trap the mud before it got into the stream but unfortunately they have not quite worked", Yearwood told Trakker News.
"We have also engaged some consultants in the past to advise us on the problem but the advise did not seem to work and the problem is still with us. It is against this background that we asked for this problem be addressed under the Water and Sanitation and Systems Project funded by the IDB and we are hoping out of this project to get some resolution", he added.
The Water and Sanitation and Systems Project is being funded by the IDB to the tune of US$50 million.
