Berbice. Premdas Gomes, 36, of Number 52 Village Corentyne has become the latest road fatality in Berbice after he was struck down and died almost instantly Monday morning.
His wife Usha Devi told the media that her husband left their house around 08:30h on a bicycle, heading to the Number 55 Rice Mill where he worked for five years. Soon after the tragedy, she received the news from a resident who informed her that her husband was struck down at Number 53 Village.
The woman, acting on the information, rushed to the scene where she found her husband lying on the southern parapet of the public road with a wound to the right side of his skull.
According to the widow, she was told that the car struck her husband from behind, as it was travelling in the same direction. She identified the body which was clad in a gray t-shirt and brown short pants as her husband. The pink and blue bicycle was lying nearby completely damaged by the impact of the accident.
The woman said her husband was the sole breadwinner of his family, and she has already agreed to a $1 million compensation settlement with the driver of the car, who was identified as Linden Fraser.
The car, a white AT 212 with number plate PLL 2621 is parked in the Number 51 Police Station Compound while Fraser remained in police custody.
The couple had lived together for 14 years and their union has produced six children, four of whom are still in their care.
