Georgetown : Guyana’s Environmental Minister Robert Persaud says the country is taking steps to change its closed season for the hunting and capture of wild birds.
Guyana’s target markets include Asia South Africa and the Middle East.
The Minister noted that to facilitate the new closed season from 2013, government is expected to amend the regulation accompanying the Wild Birds Act of 1919.
Adding that the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the local Fauna Association are inching closer towards a consensus to change the closed season from April 1st to August 1st to January 1st to May 31st each year, Persaud explained that this would allow for greater management and compliance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
The closed season is aimed at protecting the birds when they are vulnerable during the breeding season which experts say the breeding season is from January to April.
The Wildlife Management Authority officials said exporters are monitored to ensure that they do not have large numbers of birds in their possession as a first step in ensuring that they do not violate the closed season.
