Work on a new facility to house the Guyana Defence Force’s Coastal Battalion in New Amsterdam is expected to commence shortly. On Monday, soldiers erected a tent and were on Tuesday clearing the plot of land opposite State House on Strand, New Amsterdam. The land where the army’s “Jaguar House” once stood will be transformed into a spanking new base.
In February, Colonel Enoch Gaskin in the company of Coast Guard Commander Gary Beaton had conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the vacant plot onboard the army’s GDF-2 helicopter piloted by Captain Anson Weekes. The Colonel recalled that the building that once stood there was demolished in 2011 and indicated that the GDF wants to make its presence more visible in Berbice.
“At this point, we have the coast guard stationed at Stanleytown and at the base at Benab… we also have an infantry platoon based here so that we can respond to any joint operations in support of the police and or customs… the idea is to make this base a little more comfortable with the ability to launch bigger operations over longer periods,” Gaskin said. On site, there was steel for a foundation while the soldiers on site was clearing the grass and bushes. The Coastal Battalion in New Amsterdam has occupied a building in the Central Police Station Compound since the “Jaguar House” was decommissioned.
