Workers hurting says union

Bridgetown,

The  workers of Barbados are hurting as a result of the economic criisis and cannot bear any additional tax burden.

This is the message from a delegation of  Barbados Workers Union (BWU) at a recent meeting with  Minister of Finance, Chris Sinckler.

The Union is recommending that every effort be made to ease this burden and suggested  that one way of doing this is to reduce the cost of energy to households. They believe government should accept a reduced tax from fuel and pass this on as a reduction in the price of the commodity to consumers.

The BWU is also suggesting that any budgetary measures to expand the construction sector should be done in a manner that ensures the awarding of contracts "is not limited to a small number of companies".

The delegation told the Minister the union is  against the privatization of the airport and seaport as a quick means for government to earn revenue. They contend that these two entities should be held on the behalf of Barbadians.

The BWU is also advocating that the $10 million fund to assist the unemployed as it relates to training should be made accessible to the workers.
