Bridgetown.
Workers at the Land Tax and Land Valuation Department in the old National Insurance Service Building refused to enter the building this morning, in protest of poor working conditions.
Senior Industrial Relations officer at the National Union of Public Workers, Wayne Walrond explained that the employees were not on strike and are willing to work, but they are unable to do so due to their work environment.
Walrond told Trakker News the working environment at the building is a “violation” of the Safety and Health At Work Act.
According to him, the poor working conditions date back more than a decade.
He also explained that while the employees of the Land Tax and Land Valuation Departments are willing to work, they cannot do so in an environment which can be “detrimental” to their health and safety. The workers are complaining about urine and feces odours, leaking roofs and mosquitoes breeding on the compound.
While noting that the employees have documented and submitted their grievances to management, Walrond said the situation needs urgent attention and called for them to be relocated.
