Young mother dies after bungled abortion

Georgetown: Adding to an alarming spate of unfortunate incidents rocking the nation, a young mother of two was yesterday pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, a few days after undergoing what some believed was a bungled abortion.

The 18-year-old, Karen Devi Bahal, of Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, was four-months pregnant at the time but according to her husband, Vishal Bahal, she was not ready for a third child as their two children are two and four months old respectively.

Reports are that the physician who conducted the medical procedure is a reputable professional attached to a private hospital and also operates a clinic on the East Coast of Demerara. According to the woman’s husband despite urging his wife not to abort the baby she insisted that it was necessary. He said that he learnt of the operation after he discovered her vomiting continuously and started complaining of severe abdominal pains on Christmas Eve day.

The severity of the pain saw him rushing his wife to the public hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and underwent surgery to repair a perforated uterus and damaged bowel. Despite the efforts to save her life she later slipped into an unconscious state and would never recover.

An autopsy is likely to be performed on Wednesday.
