Young mothers in Barbados are lacking the support systems they need to live up to the standards handed down by their predcessors.
President of the National Organisation of Women (NOW), Marilyn Rice-Bowen told Trakker News mothers of this era are at a disadvantage, having to fill the large shoes of good Caribbean mothers without the vital support system of the extended family.
"It is a critical component missing in today's world where woman are raising their children alone and by trial and error. In the past the extended family assisted with the rearing of chidren, that is no the case today", Rice-Bowen said.
"Although there are ways around it such as parenting classes, I cannot place too much blame of the shoulders of young mothers", She added.
Rice-Bowen admonish mothers who are rearing their sons to move away from the sterotypes that men do not show emotion. She said trhis only lead to unhealthly relationships when their became men.
