Georgetown: The Promenade Gardens is being spruced up in preparation for Guyana’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations and a miniature zoological Park and Play Area will be added, according to Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown (M&CC) Public Relations Officer (ag) Debra Lewis. She said the upgrade of the area includes repainting of the fence and bandstand, refurbishing of the Fountains, Walkways, and Arches and Fishing Pond. The Council would be engaged in the replanting of trees and shrubs including the Marigold (Taygete’s), Bachelor Button, (Centaurea Cyanus) and Ginger Lily (Hedychium). Also, Lewis said the Promenade Garden has several main attractions including; the Bandstand which was erected in commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee which is considered to be the oldest bandstand of three in the city. A well-known monument in the Garden is the Mahatma Gandhi Monument erected in honour of the international icon of peace and advocate of non-violent protests. The Promenade Gardens is used for several civic functions including entertainment from music bands. It is also the popular site of many public and private events including Easter Hat Shows, weddings, and fashion photo shoots. In addition, Lewis said the Council has commenced cleaning of the drains, verges and parapet of the main carriageways in the City; Works are ongoing in the High Street Charlestown area. It is anticipated that these works would intensify as the independence celebration approaches.
